Lucia Angelos was glad it was over. She’d done as she was told, the FBI was gone, and Ricardo was out of her life. And she’d even gotten some money out of it in the process.

It was time for her to take that money and start living, which was what she told her sister Maria on one of their endless phone calls. “I’m going to move to New York and get a job.”

Maria, who had been advocating such a move for five years, and who lived in New York herself, said, “You always say that, but you never do it.”

“This time I will,” vowed Lucia. “There’s nothing to keep me here. In New York at least I have you.”

“But I have Orlando.” She was referring to her husband, with whom she did not have a marriage made in heaven.

“So you can leave him, and we’ll move in together.”

Maria laughed at the absurdity of it. “Of course. We’ll go to Park Avenue and have servants.”

Lucia was not familiar with Park Avenue, and she was about to ask about it when there was a knock on her door. “Hold on a sec …” she said, then put the phone down and went to answer it.

She opened it and saw the man she hoped never to see again. “Hello, Lucia, nice to see you. You’re looking well.”

“I did what you wanted. I told the FBI everything you said.”

He nodded. “I know you did; you did a very nice job. I’m just here to make things clean and neat.”

“What …”

He moved toward her, and as he did she looked directly into his eyes. Suddenly she knew exactly why Ricardo had been so afraid of this man.

But by then it was too late.
